Windrose, a game set in the 18th century during the Golden Age of Piracy, treats gunpowder with the same value as gold. This invaluable currency is required to operate any long-range weapon, making it a priority resource for players. Given the power of ranged combat in Windrose, you’ll likely use gunpowder in 9 out of 10 encounters.
However, the game does not explicitly explain how to obtain gunpowder, especially during the early stages. Once your initial supply runs out, you may find yourself forced into melee combat. Fortunately, there are reliable methods to secure gunpowder in Windrose.
How to Obtain Gunpowder in Windrose
Gunpowder can be acquired through two primary methods: defeating enemies or crafting. Most commonly, it appears as Homemade Gunpowder.
Farming Gunpowder from Blackbeard Pirates
The fastest and easiest way to obtain gunpowder is by hunting Blackbeard Pirates in camps located on nearby islands. After unlocking a small boat, sail to the nearest island to locate these camps. Enemies respawn frequently, allowing you to farm gunpowder efficiently.
Blackbeard Pirates may drop gunpowder directly, or you can guarantee a drop by opening the Supply Cache in these camps. Each cache yields six or seven gunpowder.
While crafting is an option, defeating pirates is generally simpler due to the game’s AI, which can be parried with ease. These camps also drop a two-handed sword, which can quickly dispatch any pirate encountered.
Crafting Gunpowder in Windrose
To craft gunpowder, you must first unlock Millstones. This requires discovering Corn in the Foothills area, which is part of the main story progression.
To craft a Millstone, you need 15 Wood and one Millstone part. For each batch of gunpowder, you will need 10 Sulfur and 20 Ash. Sulfur is found in the wild, while Ash is produced by the charcoal burner in substantial quantities. Each crafted batch yields 10 Homemade Gunpowder, roughly equivalent to raiding a Blackbeard Pirate camp.
While crafting is possible, it requires significantly more effort for a modest return compared to farming from pirate camps.
