Versant Reports 22.1% Profit Decline in Q1 Amid Revenue Challenges
Versant announced its first-quarter financial results, revealing a 22.1% decline in profits to $286 million and a 1.1% drop in revenue to $1.7 billion. The decline was attributed to lower linear distribution and advertising revenues, which offset growth in the company’s platforms business.
Wall Street had projected revenue of $1.62 billion and earnings of $2.16 per share, according to Yahoo Finance.
Key Financial Highlights
- Linear distribution revenue fell 7.3% to $1.01 billion, driven by subscriber declines partially offset by contractual rate increases.
- Ad revenue declined 5.2% to $368 million due to ratings declines at its networks.
- Platforms revenue grew 9.5%, boosted by higher revenue from Fandango movie ticket purchases, video-on-demand transactions, and Fandango1, as well as increased bookings, payments, and subscription revenue at GolfNow.
- Content licensing and other revenue surged 113.5% to $121 million, driven by a major agreement for “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” and other titles.
Cost Pressures and Strategic Moves
Profits were further impacted by higher public company costs and interest expenses, following Versant’s separation from Comcast. These costs were partially offset by lower taxes due to a decrease in pre-tax income.
In a strategic move, Versant sold SportsEngine to PlayMetrics for an undisclosed amount after reviewing the asset. Additionally, the company acquired StockStory, an AI-powered financial insights platform, in April to enhance CNBC’s real-time, data-driven insights for investors.
Market Reaction
Shares of Versant jumped 11% following the release of the quarterly results.
Versant’s Strategic Shifts and Future Outlook
The company’s decision to sell SportsEngine and acquire StockStory reflects its focus on optimizing its portfolio and leveraging AI-driven solutions to bolster its financial insights capabilities. Despite the challenges in linear and ad revenues, Versant’s platforms segment and content licensing showed resilience, signaling potential areas of growth.
