For years, platforms like SteamDB and Steam Charts have been the primary sources for real-time player counts on Valve’s storefront, offering developers and players a clear view of a game’s popularity. However, other major gaming platforms, including consoles, have lacked similar transparency—until now.
Sony is testing a new feature on the PlayStation 5 that provides weekly player counts for the top 10 most-played games in a given region. Unlike real-time tracking, this feature highlights total players over the past seven days, offering a broader perspective on game engagement.
YouTuber Mystic shared a video demonstrating the feature, showcasing games like Grand Theft Auto V with 5.13 million players and Minecraft with 4.9 million players in the past week. The data appears to be region-specific, allowing players to see which titles are most active in their area.
In addition to weekly player totals, the feature also displays trending games with percentage-based surges. For example, Overwatch saw a 255% surge, while Company of Heroes experienced a 249% increase in players. The baseline for these percentages remains unclear, but it may compare the current week’s numbers to the previous week’s average.
Historically, platforms like Steam, SteamDB, and Steam Charts have dominated player tracking, shaping perceptions of a game’s success or failure based on simultaneous player counts. This data often influences purchasing decisions, as players rely on these metrics to gauge a title’s popularity.
With Sony’s new feature, developers and players can now access weekly console player data, providing a more accurate picture of a game’s performance. Many titles have larger fanbases on consoles than on PC, making this data particularly valuable for understanding market trends.
