Windrose has become an overnight sensation in early 2026, and developer Kraken Express is preparing a series of updates to expand the game’s content. The most anticipated addition is the new Ashlands biome, described as a high-level region of the game’s map. However, the studio has not yet revealed further details about the biome’s features or mechanics.
Six-Month Wait for the Ashlands Update
In a post on Windrose’s Steam Community page, Kraken Express explained that the Ashlands update is still in development and will not arrive for approximately six months. The studio emphasized its commitment to delivering a polished experience, stating:
"We are populating [the update] with our own plans and some popular requests, and then, as it always is with game development, we will sit down and cut out some of the stuff to make it actually deliverable."
The developers also shared their philosophy for Windrose’s future updates, emphasizing a focus on enriching existing gameplay systems rather than solely introducing new biomes. This suggests the Ashlands update will include core gameplay improvements alongside the new biome.
Kraken Express concluded the post by acknowledging that their ambition to make meaningful changes requires additional time to match the game’s current quality standards.
Smaller Update Coming This Week or Next
Before the Ashlands update, players can expect a smaller patch arriving this week or next. This update aims to address several persistent issues reported since launch, including:
- High CPU usage when Windrose is idle
- Connectivity problems
- General performance improvements
The patch will also introduce:
- Over 40 new building pieces for base construction
- More than 50 quality-of-life improvements to enhance gameplay
Due to potential changes in the update, Kraken Express advised players to back up their settings, as the patch may reset Steam Cloud saves upon installation.
Windrose’s Rapid Success
Windrose achieved remarkable success in its first month, surpassing one million sales. The game’s popularity has set high expectations for its future updates, particularly the Ashlands biome, which players are eagerly anticipating.
