Disney+ subscribers will soon be able to stream Avatar: Fire and Ash from the comfort of their homes. Sigourney Weaver made the announcement during Disney's upfronts on Tuesday, revealing the film's streaming debut date as June 24.
This follows the film's theatrical release on December 19, marking a six-month gap between its cinema debut and streaming availability.
Upcoming Disney+ Releases Announced at Upfronts
Following Weaver's announcement, Rosario Dawson took the stage to share details about another highly anticipated Disney+ release. She confirmed that Ahsoka Season 2 will premiere on the platform in early 2027.
Avatar: Fire and Ash – Plot and Cast Details
Avatar: Fire and Ash is the third installment in James Cameron's sci-fi/fantasy franchise, which has grossed billions worldwide. The film continues the story of the Sully clan, led by Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña), as they face ongoing threats from Colonel Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang) and the human RDA forces.
A new character joins the adventure: Oona Chaplin plays Varang, the leader of the ash-based Mangkwan clan of Pandora’s native Na’vi. Varang seeks to spread the gospel of fire and ash across the planet and allies with Quaritch in exchange for human weaponry.
Box Office Performance and Franchise Future
Avatar: Fire and Ash grossed nearly $1.5 billion globally, a substantial figure but a notable decline compared to its predecessors. The original Avatar and Avatar: The Way of Water each surpassed $2 billion, securing their places as the first and third highest-grossing films of all time, respectively.
The franchise's fourth and fifth films are tentatively scheduled for 2029 and 2031, though no official decisions have been made regarding their production. Insiders told TheWrap in April that discussions are underway to reduce budgets and shorten runtime to mitigate financial risks associated with the franchise's massive production costs.
Oscar Recognition for Avatar: Fire and Ash
The film received two nominations at the 98th Academy Awards, including the franchise's first-ever Oscar nomination for Best Costume Design, awarded to Deborah L. Scott. Additionally, Avatar: Fire and Ash secured the franchise's third consecutive win for Best Visual Effects, with the award presented to Joe Letteri, Richard Baneham, Eric Saindon, and Daniel Barrett.
