AMC+ has become the new streaming home for most of Doctor Who’s modern era, but not in the way fans might have expected. The streamer has secured rights to over 150 episodes from the show’s “reboot” era, spanning from 2005 to 2022. These episodes will be available on AMC+ starting June 11.

However, the deal excludes several key pieces of content. The 60th anniversary specials, as well as episodes featuring Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor, will remain exclusively on Disney+ for the foreseeable future. Additionally, U.S. audiences still have no confirmed release date for the British spinoff series The War Between the Land and the Sea, which aired in the U.K. last year. Fans seeking Classic Who will also need a BritBox subscription, adding another layer of complexity to accessing the full franchise.

The acquisition marks a homecoming of sorts for Doctor Who in the U.S. BBC America, which is part of the AMC Networks umbrella, served as the series’ U.S. broadcast home from 2009 to 2022. This period roughly covers the Eleventh through the Thirteenth Doctor eras, while the first four seasons aired in America on the SciFi Channel.

What This Means for the Franchise’s Future

The move has reignited speculation about whether AMC+ could play a larger role in the franchise’s future, whether as a production partner, distributor, or even a potential revival of the BBC America brand. While the streamer may be focused on boosting its subscription library, the timing of the deal raises questions about long-term plans for Doctor Who.

Rumors about the show’s next home have circulated for months, with nearly every major streamer reportedly in talks to replace Disney+. Names like HBO Max and Netflix have been floated, but no official announcements have been made. The clock is ticking, especially with a Doctor Who Christmas special expected later this year.

Unanswered Questions and Speculation

The upcoming Christmas special has left fans with more questions than answers. Will Billie Piper make a surprise return, as her cliffhanger appearance in Season 15 suggested? Could David Tennant reprise his role as the Tenth Doctor? How will the special bridge the gap between eras, or will it skip ahead to the introduction of a new Doctor entirely?

Looking further ahead, the franchise’s future remains uncertain. The BBC has expressed strong support for Doctor Who, but with no current Doctor and no announced plans for future seasons, key questions persist. Will Russell T. Davies continue as showrunner, or will new leadership take the reins?
