Blackmagic Design has released iOS version 3.3 of its Blackmagic Camera app, adding Apple Watch compatibility and ATEM camera control features. The update enhances usability for solo creators and broadcasters alike.

Apple Watch Remote Control

The new Camera Apple Watch companion app allows users to remotely control and monitor their iPhone within Wi-Fi range. Key features include:

  • Start and stop recording with a tap
  • Adjust zoom, frame rate, shutter speed (angle), white balance, and ISO
  • View video feed for framing control (though focus checking may be limited due to screen size)

This setup benefits solo creators who mount their iPhone on a tripod for standup or vlogging activities. The Watch app syncs automatically after installation via the iPhone.

ATEM Mini Switcher Integration

Blackmagic Camera now supports control from the company’s ATEM Mini switcher, popular among streamers and broadcasters. To enable this feature, users need the $420 Blackmagic Camera ProDock, which provides HDMI output, timecode, USB-C, and additional ports for iPhone 17 Pro or iPhone 17 Pro Max.

With the ProDock connected, users can:

  • Link a single HDMI cable from the ProDock to an ATEM Mini switcher
  • Adjust settings, trigger recording, and control focus and zoom
  • Access DaVinci primary color correction for live production

Focus and Zoom Demand Controls

Blackmagic Camera now supports the company’s Focus and Zoom Demand controls—a knob and handle designed for broadcast cameras. When connected via USB-C to a ProDock, users can adjust zoom and focus without removing their hands from tripod handles.

Combined with ATEM Mini integration, this feature enables the iPhone to function as a full broadcast camera, offering a compact yet powerful solution for live production.

Additional Updates

The latest version also introduces ProRes RAW stabilization and includes general bug fixes and performance improvements.

Availability

Blackmagic Camera for iOS 3.3 is available now as a free download from the Apple App Store.
