Alleged Gunman Subdued Before Breaching White House Correspondents' Dinner Perimeter
An alleged gunman who opened fire at the White House Correspondents' Dinner on Saturday was immediately subdued by law enforcement, acting Attorney General Todd Blanche announced. Blanche praised the quick response, calling the incident "a massive security success story."
Perimeter Breach Averted, Law Enforcement Credited
The suspect "barely breached the perimeter" of the event before being taken into custody, Blanche stated during a Sunday appearance on CNN's State of the Union. He emphasized the effectiveness of law enforcement, saying:
"This was law enforcement doing exactly what they trained their whole lives to do."
Recent Security Failures Heighten Scrutiny
The incident follows multiple high-profile security lapses involving former President Donald Trump. In July 2024, a gunman attempted to assassinate Trump during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Just weeks later, another man tried to attack Trump at his Florida golf course.
Blanche reiterated the swift response in an interview on CBS' Face the Nation, stating:
"As far as what happened with him coming down and breaching the perimeter, as you've seen from some videos that have already been released, he was apprehended and subdued feet away from breaking the perimeter, so we were all safe inside, and that's a testament to the Secret Service doing their job."
Security Experts Acknowledge Success but Highlight Challenges
While officials celebrated the response, former Homeland Security counter-terrorism official John Cohen noted areas for improvement in an interview on ABC's This Week:
"It was in a location that not only was accessible to the public, but being a hotel allowed people to enter the location without their bags being searched and without being vetted. So these are the types of locations that are really challenging for law enforcement to secure. But unfortunately, in the current environment, they have to do everything they can to secure those locations."
