A California Highway Patrol (CHP) officer deployed spike strips to stop a stolen traffic management pickup last Thursday, ending a high-speed chase that spanned multiple freeways.
The incident began when an individual allegedly stole a white pickup truck equipped with an arrow board and loaded with construction gear. The theft occurred in broad daylight, with the stolen vehicle’s flashing arrow board drawing immediate attention.
The pursuit started on the 5 Freeway in the San Fernando Valley and continued onto the 14 Freeway, heading toward Santa Clarita. Footage shared by the California Highway Patrol Antelope Valley on Instagram shows an officer hiding behind a concrete barrier. As the stolen truck approached, the officer quickly deployed the spike strips, which the truck ran over.
Seconds later, multiple police vehicles joined the pursuit. According to NBC Los Angeles, at least one tire on the stolen truck was completely shredded by the spike strips. Realizing the vehicle was undrivable, the driver pulled over near the Kern and Los Angeles County border.
Local media reports indicate the female driver was ordered to throw the keys out the window before being taken into custody. The CHP has not disclosed a motive for the theft.
