The suspect in the White House Correspondents' Dinner shooting has been formally charged, according to law enforcement officials. The incident occurred on April 29, 2024, during the annual event in Washington, D.C.
Investigators identified the suspect as Shane Matthew Ostrem, 57, of Torrance, California. Ostrem was taken into custody on April 30, 2024, without incident in Torrance, following a tip from the public.
On May 1, 2024, Ostrem was charged in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia with assault with a dangerous weapon and discharging a firearm during a crime of violence. These federal charges carry potential penalties of up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
According to the FBI, Ostrem allegedly fired multiple shots from a 9mm handgun near the entrance of the Washington Hilton, where the dinner was held. The shots wounded two individuals, both of whom were treated and released from a local hospital. No one was killed in the incident.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have not yet determined a motive for the shooting. The White House Correspondents' Association has stated that the annual dinner will proceed as scheduled, with enhanced security measures in place.
Law enforcement officials confirmed that Ostrem had no prior criminal record and was not on any federal watchlists. The Torrance Police Department and the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force are leading the investigation.
