MSNBC host Chris Hayes dedicated nearly 10 minutes of his “All In” program Wednesday night to breaking down President Donald Trump’s ongoing lawsuit against the IRS, labeling it a potential “greatest heist in American history.”
The lawsuit, filed by Trump in January, alleges the IRS failed to prevent the leak of his tax returns during the 2020 presidential campaign. Recent reports indicate the Trump administration’s Justice Department is now weighing a settlement worth $10 billion or more.
“A direct transfer of billions of your taxpayer dollars directly into the bank account and the pockets of Donald Trump, all dressed up as a settlement of a lawsuit in which Donald Trump is both the plaintiff and also the defendant,”
Hayes criticized the proposed settlement as a misuse of public funds amid rising costs for Americans due to wars and tariffs. “The president, in effect, sued himself for more than $10 billion, or he sued the government he controls,” he said. “This is an attempt at the largest theft ever by an American politician. Plainly, flagrantly, blatantly, in plain daylight.”
Hayes further emphasized the unprecedented nature of the conflict of interest, stating, “The term itself, ‘conflict of interest,’ hardly begins to capture what’s happening.”
Hayes Compares Trump’s Tactics to a Mafia Shakedown
The MSNBC anchor drew a stark comparison between Trump’s legal maneuver and organized crime, arguing, “The mob has a word for that: shakedown.” He outlined the absurdity of the scenario: a $10 billion check signed by Trump, paid for by American taxpayers, to enrich Trump himself.
“He’s suing the federal government that he controls. A check for $10 billion that he hopes to secure that will go to Donald Trump, signed by Donald Trump. And who’s paying the check? The American taxpayers.”
Potential $10B Settlement Could Fund Critical Programs for Years
Hayes highlighted the staggering scale of the proposed settlement, noting it could fund:
- Federal disaster relief for an entire year
- The National Park Service for five years
- The Peace Corps for 20 years
“All of that could go straight into the Trump family coffers,” he warned.
Hayes Warns of Unprecedented Corruption Under Trump
Concluding his segment, Hayes declared, “I am telling you, there is no scale or precedent for corruption like this in the United States. It would put every other Trump grift to shame.” He framed the lawsuit as emblematic of a broader erosion of democratic norms, stating, “This is what life looks like under a mad king. Every day brings a new ‘let them eat cake’ moment.”
