Indianapolis Colts quarterback Daniel Jones delivered a standout performance in his first season with the team, leading up to a devastating torn Achilles in late December. Despite the injury, the Colts rewarded Jones with a two-year, $88 million contract, signaling their confidence in his ability to return to form. As Jones continues to make progress in his rehabilitation, there is optimism he could be ready to start the regular season in September.
With Jones now under a lucrative new deal, the Colts have made it clear they believe in his potential to pick up where he left off once he’s fully healthy. In a recent interview on the Rich Eisen Show, Colts general manager Chris Ballard shared insights into what surprised him most about Jones’ game—comparing him to a former Pro Bowler.
"We had Alex Smith in Kansas City, and they’re a lot alike. How they prepare for the game, how steady they are day-to-day — there’s a lot of similarities. And then I probably underestimated his accuracy coming in the door. This dude is accurate, man. And when he’s in rhythm and really in a groove, he is excellent."
Ballard continued, emphasizing Jones’ consistency and professionalism:
"Those are the things that — we had scouted Daniel, but until you live with somebody, you don’t know them. So, living with him every day, seeing his consistency, seeing him not get too high or too low, all those things bode well for the Colts and for his future. He’s really good, Rich. This guy’s talented and good."
Jones, who will turn 29 next month, completed 68.0% of his passes for 3,101 yards, 19 touchdowns, and eight interceptions in his first season with the Colts. He earned the starting role after outperforming Anthony Richardson in training camp and preseason, starting 13 games for Indianapolis in 2024.
