The Daily Show lampooned Hung Cao’s appointment as acting Navy Secretary, following John Phelan’s departure, suggesting the veteran’s views align with the Trump administration’s perceived extremism.
During Thursday’s monologue, host Michael Kosta acknowledged Cao’s 20 years of experience but questioned why the administration continues to appoint figures he deemed “crazy.” Kosta highlighted Cao’s past anti-Wiccan commentary, in which he expressed fears that Virginia would be “taken over by witches.”
“No, yeah, we can’t let Virginia be taken over by witches. Also, I have a follow-up question,” Kosta said, airing footage of Cao’s remarks. “What the f–k are you talking about? I mean, why is everybody they appoint so f–king crazy?”
Kosta continued, criticizing Cao’s recent remarks about the U.S. Navy under the Biden administration. Cao had criticized the Navy’s decision to appoint a drag-performing sailor as an ambassador, calling for “alpha males and alpha females” instead. In response, Kosta quipped:
“Hmm, alpha females, right. So, drag queens. Maybe he’s right. Maybe we need alpha males who will beat the s–t out of our enemies and alpha females who will mock their insecurities so precisely they’ll never leave the house again.”
The segment also included Cao’s claim that the Navy needed recruits who weren’t “taken in by drag queens,” further fueling Kosta’s satire.
