The New York Jets faced a major dilemma at the 2024 NFL Draft when selecting their second overall pick. With Fernando Mendoza locked in as the Raiders’ first overall pick, the Jets had to choose between David Bailey and Arvell Reese. Betting markets fluctuated frequently, reflecting the uncertainty surrounding the decision.
One key moment came when the Jets canceled David Bailey’s pre-draft visit to their facility. Bettors and analysts interpreted this as a potential sign that the Jets were reconsidering Bailey’s fit. However, during a press conference on Friday, Bailey revealed his initial reaction to the canceled visit.
“Initially, I probably thought they're not going to pick me,” Bailey said. “But I was thinking back to the interactions prior to the meeting getting canceled and I was thinking back to the interaction I had with them at the Combine and at the steakhouse and the FaceTimes with Mougey. I had a good relationship with them. I felt good talking to them. I feel like they had a good attitude towards me and vice versa.”
Bailey’s agent later reassured him that the canceled visit did not indicate he was out of contention. The Jets’ eventual selection of Bailey at No. 2 overall confirmed that the pre-draft meeting was not a decisive factor in their decision-making process.
