Declan Rice is poised to be the first name on Gareth Southgate’s team sheet at the FIFA World Cup 2026 this summer. Since his debut in 2019, Rice has been a mainstay for the Three Lions, bringing experience, leadership, and tactical acumen to Thomas Tuchel’s squad. He played nearly every minute of England’s five-match 2022 World Cup campaign, and his 72 caps rank among the highest for any outfield player in the current squad.

Rice is widely regarded as one of the world’s best box-to-box midfielders, renowned for his blend of speed, strength, on-field intelligence, and defensive contributions. His tactical flexibility allows him to excel in multiple roles: as part of a double pivot, as a traditional box-to-box midfielder, or as a hybrid 6/8. This versatility makes him a tactical asset in nearly any formation.

International Role Under Thomas Tuchel

Tuchel has deployed Rice primarily in a double pivot, most recently pairing him with Elliot Anderson. This duo is expected to start the World Cup opener in Tuchel’s preferred 4-2-3-1 formation. Rice has also featured on the left side of a midfield three in a 4-3-3 setup. In possession, this formation often transitions into a 4-2-4 or 3-3-4, with a fullback pushing forward to create attacking overloads.

Rice’s ability to play centrally and cover vast areas of the pitch in transition allows teammates like Morgan Rogers or Jude Bellingham to exploit pockets of space and create chances without bearing significant defensive responsibility. His presence ensures that England’s midfield remains both dynamic and disciplined.

Club Success at Arsenal

At the club level, Rice joined Arsenal for a team-record transfer fee of £105 million three years ago. He immediately became a cornerstone of what has been one of the best defenses in Europe, frequently partnering with Martín Zubimendi in a double pivot this season.

Mastering the Midfield: Rice’s Impact

Both Mikel Arteta and Tuchel have recognized that Rice performs at his best when given the freedom to read the game, roam, and intervene where needed. His influence is most pronounced in the attacking and middle thirds, where he excels at disrupting opposition attacks before they develop. Whether it’s winning a loose ball, claiming a 50-50 duel, or intercepting a pass, Rice’s defensive actions often lead to quick counterattacks. When teammates make mistakes, Rice is the one who makes the lung-bursting recovery run to clean up the mess—earning him the reputation as an ‘eraser’ on the pitch.

Since joining Arsenal, Rice has significantly improved his attacking output. His goal involvements have risen year-over-year, progressing from a handful per season at West Ham to consistently contributing 15-20 goal contributions (goals + assists) across all competitions in north London. His set-piece prowess further enhances his value, making him a dual threat in both defensive and attacking phases of play.
