The Cleveland Browns have not publicly updated their quarterback depth chart following last week’s minicamp practices, but internal evaluations suggest a clear frontrunner is emerging. According to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com, Deshaun Watson has positioned himself as the favorite to start at quarterback in Week 1 of the 2025 season.
During the minicamp, both Watson and Shedeur Sanders received first-team reps. However, sources cited by Cabot indicate Watson logged more snaps with the starters. Watson did not play in 2025 due to an Achilles tear, but his NFL experience—unmatched by Sanders, Dillon Gabriel, or rookie Taylen Green—appears to be a decisive factor for the Browns.
Under head coach Todd Monken, Cleveland is implementing a new offensive system. Watson’s history of adapting to various schemes over his career gives him an edge in learning the new playbook. Additionally, the Browns’ offense features several young players, and Watson’s veteran presence is valued for his ability to guide them effectively.
With approximately six weeks remaining in the offseason program, Sanders still has time to challenge Watson’s position. However, Cabot notes that Sanders will need to deliver standout performances to surpass Watson on the depth chart before training camp begins. She writes that Sanders "will have to dazzle the coaching staff to land atop the depth chart heading into training camp."
