Activists Target Ridglan Farms in Wisconsin

On April 18, animal rights activists attempted to free nearly 2,000 beagles from Ridglan Farms, a Wisconsin-based company that breeds dogs for biomedical research. The facility, located outside Madison, has faced accusations of animal welfare violations by state regulators.

Initial Rescue Attempt on March 15

This was not the first attempt by activists to intervene. On March 15, dozens of volunteers from the Coalition to Save the Ridglan Dogs stormed the facility, removing 30 beagles from cages. Twenty-two dogs were successfully relocated to homes, while eight were seized by police and returned to Ridglan.

Escalation Leads to Violent Confrontation

The April 18 operation drew over 1,000 activists, but their efforts were met with a heavy police presence. Law enforcement, primarily the Dane County Sheriff’s Office, used forceful tactics including:

  • Rubber bullets
  • Pepper spray
  • Tear gas
  • Stinger grenades (confirmed by the sheriff’s office)

Injuries and Arrests Reported

Multiple activists sustained injuries during the clash:

  • A woman had her nose broken.
  • A 67-year-old Navy veteran was pinned to the ground, exposed to tear gas, and struggled to breathe under an officer’s restraint.
  • A man attempting to breach the facility’s fence was knocked unconscious and lost a tooth.
  • Police removed a woman’s protective goggles to spray pepper gas directly in her face.

Several individuals required emergency medical treatment.

National Attention on Animal Research Practices

The campaign has drawn significant media coverage, prompting discussions among political leaders, including members of Congress and the Trump administration. The coalition’s efforts have thrust Ridglan Farms into the spotlight, framing the issue as a national debate on animal welfare in biomedical research.

"It’s exceptionally rare that the tiny, perpetually marginal, and politically outmatched animal rights movement manages to capture national attention."

Legal and Ethical Controversy

Ridglan Farms has been accused of hundreds of animal welfare violations by state regulators. The company breeds beagles for research labs across the country, raising ethical questions about the treatment of animals in scientific experimentation.
