Nestled in the heart of El Salvador’s capital, the Biblioteca Nacional de El Salvador (BINAES) stands as a 7-story monument to knowledge, literature, and innovation. Open to the public 24 hours a day at no cost, the library is a cornerstone of San Salvador’s revitalized cultural landscape, positioned directly across from the Catedral Metropolitana de San Salvador and flanked by the Palacio Nacional de El Salvador and Jardín Centroamérica.
The library embodies a vision of beauty, intellectual pursuit, and shared prosperity, offering a stark contrast to the often chaotic and unsafe city squares of Western capitals. Visitors to BINAES’s gardens and walkable pathways, as well as its interior spaces, will find families and children at ease, exploring the library’s offerings in a clean, secure environment.
Donated to El Salvador by the Chinese government, BINAES spans seven floors and includes a cafeteria on the first floor and an Italian restaurant on the seventh. The library’s design is a blend of elegance and futurism, reflecting a forward-looking vision for El Salvador that prominently integrates Bitcoin technology and educational resources.
Family-Friendly Zones and Educational Play
BINAES places a strong emphasis on supporting families and the next generation. The second floor is dedicated to young children, featuring:
- Educational tools and books
- Physical entertainment options to channel energy
The third floor includes a dedicated LEGO section, complete with multiple tables where parents and children can collaborate. It also offers family-friendly video games such as Mario Party and Minecraft.
The fourth floor caters to children aged 8–12 and fans of fantasy and fiction, with themed areas for Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, and Harry Potter. These spaces feature:
- Collection-grade LEGO sets and merchandise
- Hundreds of manga books
- Comprehensive libraries dedicated to each fictional universe
Adult Literature and Bitcoin Integration
The fifth floor serves as the core of the library, housing literature, history, and adult-focused books across major genres. This section includes:
- Thousands of books spanning all major genres
- A dedicated section on social sciences, featuring works by libertarian Austrian economists such as Ludwig von Mises, Milton Friedman, Murray Rothbard, and Ayn Rand
While the selection of Austrian economics texts is not exhaustive, it reflects the library’s commitment to diverse intellectual perspectives. The integration of Bitcoin technology is woven throughout BINAES, aligning with El Salvador’s status as the first country to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender.
"Having traveled to many countries and cities, the safety, tranquility, and cleanliness of this area of San Salvador was remarkable. It stands in unignorable contrast to the city squares of many Western capitals, which are often unsafe, filled with garbage, and host to the homeless and drug addicted."
