Zachary Krug, an officer with the Temple Terrace Police Department in Florida, has been arrested on charges of vehicular homicide and reckless driving following a high-speed crash that resulted in the death of a 6-year-old girl.
According to investigators, Krug was driving at a speed exceeding 100 mph in a 50 mph zone when the collision occurred. Notably, authorities confirmed that he was not responding to an emergency call or conducting any law enforcement activity at the time of the incident.
The crash involved Krug’s police SUV, which collided with a Nissan Pathfinder attempting a U-turn. The Pathfinder was carrying a mother and her three children. The collision claimed the life of Layla Sakowski, a 6-year-old, and left several others seriously injured, including her 8-year-old sister.
In response to the incident, the Temple Terrace Police Department terminated Krug’s employment, citing violations of department policies and state laws.
