The U.S. Department of Justice has once again indicted former FBI Director James Comey, this time for an alleged threat he made toward former President Donald Trump on Instagram. The indictment, filed in a North Carolina federal court on Tuesday, May 14, 2024, centers on a now-deleted image Comey posted to the platform in May 2023.
The image showed a seashell arrangement forming the numbers 8647. According to the DOJ, a reasonable recipient familiar with the circumstances would interpret the post as a serious expression of intent to do harm.
The phrase eighty-six is slang commonly used to mean to get rid of or throw out. The DOJ alleges that Comey's use of the number sequence in this context constituted a veiled threat.
This is the latest in a series of legal actions involving Comey, who has faced multiple indictments and investigations over the past year.
