Fortnite’s Zero Build mode has always appealed to players who prefer strategy over the frenetic pace of building. The latest Chapter 7, Season 2 update, however, transforms Zero Build from a simple battle royale variant into a standalone mode with unique mechanics and fresh gameplay dynamics.
Epic Games introduced significant changes in today’s Act 3 update, including new items inspired by Overwatch and its heroes. Yet the most impactful updates arrived in Zero Build, reshaping how players engage with the game. As a longtime fan of the mode, I’ve found the new experience refreshing and far more enjoyable than the traditional battle royale format.

New Zero Build Mechanics: Pocket Items, Glider Control, and Fall Damage Changes
Zero Build now introduces a Pocket Item system, replacing the traditional build mechanic. Players spawn with a pistol, shield, and a Pocket Item bound to the Build button. These items—such as the Shockwave Grenade, MediMist, and Shield Bubble—offer unlimited usage with a cooldown timer. At any vending machine, players can swap their Pocket Item for an alternative, adding strategic depth to early-game encounters.
This change eliminates the vulnerability of landing without protective structures. Instead of scrambling for loot while exposed, players can immediately engage in combat or use their Pocket Item for defense. Previously, being caught out of position in Zero Build often meant certain defeat. Now, the mode offers far greater flexibility and survivability.
Glider Redeployment and Fall Damage Overhaul
Zero Build also introduces two major mobility enhancements:
- Glider redeployment: Players can now cut their glider mid-flight and redeploy it after jumping from a high altitude. This allows for rapid repositioning or escapes.
- Fall damage rework: Taking lethal fall damage no longer eliminates a player. Instead, they enter a lengthy “splat” animation, stand back up with low health, and can continue playing. This change applies to both Zero Build and standard battle royale modes.
The ability to cut your glider and mitigate fall damage adds a new layer of risk-reward gameplay. While risky, these mechanics can be lifesaving in high-pressure situations where quick escapes or repositioning are critical.
Unlimited Pickaxe Stamina: A Game-Changer for Zero Build
Perhaps the most transformative update is the removal of stamina management for the pickaxe. In previous seasons, Fortnite introduced stamina mechanics that forced players to manage a resource meter while sprinting or swinging their pickaxe. This often led to frustration, especially when chasing opponents or teammates.
With the latest update, players now enjoy unlimited stamina while holding their pickaxe. This change eliminates the tedium of resource management and allows for uninterrupted movement and resource gathering. For players who struggled with stamina mechanics, this update is a welcome relief.
Epic Games has framed these Zero Build changes as an “experiment” that will run through the end of Season 2. However, given the overwhelmingly positive reception from players and critics alike, it’s likely these mechanics will remain a permanent fixture in future updates.
For those tired of Fortnite’s fast-paced building meta, Zero Build now offers a compelling alternative—one that feels like a completely different game rather than just a stripped-down variant of battle royale.
