The Mammoth–Golden Knights first-round series has been anything but predictable. With an experienced Vegas squad stacked with superstars and a hungry Utah newcomer still finding its footing—and neither team boasting a reliable goalie—these games have swung wildly. Big leads vanish as quickly as they appear, momentum shifts with every period, and tired observers are left wide awake until the final whistle.
Following a Game 4 where Vegas stormed to a 3-0 lead, collapsed to 4-3, and then won in overtime, the teams delivered another 5-4 thriller in Game 5—this time requiring a second overtime to decide the outcome. The Golden Knights now stand one win away from eliminating the Mammoth, but in this series, no victory comes easily.
Despite the high-scoring results, both teams showed stretches of strong defensive play—with the notable exception of their goaltending. In the playoffs, however, only one thing matters: which team bends enough to break.
Game 5 Recap: A Back-and-Forth Battle
In Nevada-set Game 5, the first four goals followed a clear pattern: Utah would score, and minutes later, Vegas would answer. Late in the second period, the Golden Knights took their first lead on a play that can only be blamed on goaltender Karel Vejmelka.
Then, Dylan Guenther—Utah’s 22-year-old leading goal-scorer and one of many Mammoths playing in their first postseason (excluding the 2020 bubble)—evened the score with a one-timer off a breakout just six minutes into the third period.
As regulation wound down, the Mammoth forced a turnover in their own zone and capitalized. Playoff rookie Michael Carcone finished the rush with a goal that, while thrilling, nearly cost fans a full night’s sleep.
"With time ticking away in regulation, the Mammoth forced a turnover in their own end, then hit the gas. This time playoff newcomer Michael Carcone finished the chance on the rush, earning the goal that—not that I'm complaining!—looked like it would give me a full night's sleep."

What’s Next for Golden Knights and Mammoth?
The Golden Knights lead the series 3-2 and are one win away from advancing. However, given the unpredictability of this matchup, no team can afford to relax. Game 6 will be a must-watch as both sides look to end the series—or force a Game 7.
