Google has announced a major refresh for Android Auto, introducing a redesigned interface with customizable widgets, edge-to-edge Google Maps, and new features powered by AI and Dolby Atmos. The update also brings high-resolution YouTube support to vehicles from multiple automakers.

Android Auto Gets a Full Redesign

The refreshed Android Auto features a "full refresh that brings personal design touches, widgets you can see at a glance, and edge-to-edge Google Maps to your dash." The new design, based on Material 3 Expressive, is optimized for any screen size, from circular infotainment systems to sloping widescreen displays.

Users can now customize their dashboard with widgets for photos, weather, favorite contacts, a large clock display, and shortcuts to garage door openers. The update builds on the previously introduced Immersive Navigation experience.

YouTube and Dolby Atmos Arrive on Android Auto

YouTube is coming to Android Auto later this year, supporting high-resolution video playback. The feature will be available in vehicles from BMW, Ford, Genesis, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes, Renault, Skoda, and Volvo.

Video playback pauses when the vehicle shifts into gear, but audio continues, allowing users to listen to podcasts or other content. Additionally, Dolby Atmos support is being added for select apps and vehicles. Spotify and YouTube Music will also receive visual enhancements for easier in-car use.

AI-Powered Features with Gemini

Google is integrating Gemini into Android Auto and vehicles with Google built-in, enabling users to ask questions about their specific vehicle model. This includes inquiries about dashboard lights, trunk space, and more.

For vehicles with Google built-in, Google Maps gains improved precision with live lane guidance. Using the vehicle’s front-facing camera, the system can "understand what lane you’re in and advise you in real time as you change lanes or exit."

Additional Updates for Google Built-In Vehicles

Vehicles with Google built-in will also receive improved media apps and seamless video-to-audio transitions. Meeting apps like Zoom are expected to arrive later this year.

Google highlighted that there are now over 250 million Android Auto-compatible cars on the road, making these updates significant for a large user base.
