Prime Video’s animated superhero series Invincible has spent its first three seasons building a formidable rogues’ gallery for its protagonist, Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun). From underpowered foes like The Elephant and Doc Seismic to apocalyptic threats such as the Thraxans and Sequids, and even terrifying supervillains like Angstrom Levy and Conquest, Mark has faced a diverse array of antagonists. However, the show has lacked a definitive ‘big bad’—until now.
With Season 4, Invincible introduces Grand Regent Thragg, the all-powerful leader of the Viltrum Empire and the series’ ultimate villain. Thragg is positioned as the final boss, the archnemesis against whom all other adversaries—minor or major—will be measured. To bring this character to life, co-showrunners Robert Kirkman and Simon Racioppa turned to an actor with the perfect blend of gravitas and intensity.
Why Lee Pace Was Chosen for Thragg
Kirkman and Racioppa knew they needed a voice actor capable of embodying Thragg’s sheer power and menace. Their first choice? Lee Pace, an actor Kirkman had long admired for his ability to convey quiet strength through his voice.
“I’ve always wanted to work with Lee Pace,” Kirkman told Den of Geek. “I would run into him at events and things and admire him from afar. He just has this quiet power that he exudes with his voice that we thought would be absolutely perfect for that character. So the casting process was basically asking if Lee was available.”
Pace, a genre staple since his breakout role in Pushing Daisies (2007), has become a go-to actor for portraying galactic tyrants. His filmography includes iconic sci-fi roles such as Ronan the Accuser in Guardians of the Galaxy, Emperor Cleon in Apple TV’s Foundation, and appearances in The Hobbit trilogy and The Twilight Saga.
Pace on Taking the Role of Thragg
Pace recently spoke with Den of Geek about his decision to join Invincible, his approach to the character, and how Thragg differs from his other major sci-fi roles. When asked about the casting process, Pace explained:
“Robert Kirkman mentioned he crossed paths with me during The Walking Dead/Halt and Catch Fire AMC days and thought I’d be great for Thragg. They called and said, ‘Would you do it?’ I did some poking around about the show and saw how cool it was, this thing that they were making. I think Kirkman is not only a really fun person to spend time with but he’s made such an interesting world here and such a cool character with Thragg that I was like, yeah, let’s do it. This is a fun beast of a character. Let’s jump in.”
When discussing what drew him to Thragg, Pace highlighted the character’s unique appeal:
“What I found fun about him is not only is he a real badass, he’s insanely durable and
