Joby Aviation has launched a week-long demonstration of its electric air taxi service in New York City. The trials are part of the company’s broader efforts to test its aircraft in real-world conditions before commercial deployment.

The demonstrations follow the successful completion of the first point-to-point flight of Joby’s electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. The flight, from John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) to heliports in Lower Manhattan and Midtown, was completed in less than 10 minutes.

Unlike helicopters, Joby’s aircraft are designed to be quiet and produce zero operating emissions, according to JoeBen Bevirt, CEO of Joby Aviation. The company is participating in the eVTOL Integration Pilot Program, a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) initiative aimed at accelerating the commercial rollout of air taxis.

Joby is still in the final stages of securing FAA certification for its aircraft. The New York City demonstrations are expected to advance this process, building on piloted demos conducted in the San Francisco Bay Area in March 2024.

Initially targeting a 2025 launch, Joby has since revised its timeline. According to Bloomberg, the company now plans to begin passenger flights in New York, Texas, and Florida in the second half of 2026.
