The Spider-Man of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has long stood apart from other versions of the character across the Spider-Verse. Tom Holland’s Peter Parker featured a younger, more modern Aunt May, a wealthy benefactor in Tony Stark, and notably, no clear connection to a deceased Uncle Ben. Fans have speculated for years about how this pivotal backstory would be addressed in the MCU.
Now, thanks to Joe Russo, the mystery is solved—or at least partially. At a 10th anniversary screening of Captain America: Civil War, which introduced Spider-Man to the MCU, Russo revealed the truth about Uncle Ben’s fate. When directly asked by CBR whether Peter’s inaction led to Ben’s death, Russo gave a definitive answer: “No.”
This revelation marks a significant departure from Spider-Man’s traditional origin. Since his debut in Amazing Fantasy #15 (1962), Uncle Ben has died in the same way across all versions of the character: killed by a burglar whom Peter failed to stop because he deemed it not his responsibility. This event has always served as the foundation for Peter’s moral code, encapsulated in the phrase, “With great power comes great responsibility.”
However, Joe Russo’s interpretation offers a different perspective. “Spider-Man was one of my favorite characters growing up,” he told CBR. “What I related to was this idea of a kid with incredible responsibility. I think you could manifest that responsibility through accidental death, and feeling the pressure, and the sense of loss in your life in a way that would keep the spirit that we wanted.”
“If Peter blamed himself for his Uncle Ben’s death, I think he becomes a very different character,” Russo continued. “That would have been a different interpretation of the character, a more intense interpretation of the character.”
This change aligns with the MCU’s vision for Peter Parker. Unlike the versions played by Tobey Maguire or Andrew Garfield—both defined by tragedy and burden—the MCU’s Peter has been a brighter, more lighthearted hero. Tom Holland’s portrayal emphasized Peter’s teenage struggles, from worrying about the homecoming dance to grappling with the deaths of surrogate father figures like Tony Stark and Aunt May.
With Spider-Man: Brand New Day on the horizon, fans may finally see the full story behind Uncle Ben’s death. Will this MCU twist redefine Spider-Man’s origin, or will it remain a footnote in the larger tapestry of the character’s legacy?
