The Minnesota Vikings have added quarterback Kyler Murray to their depth chart, joining 2024 first-round draft pick J.J. McCarthy. The competition for the starting quarterback role is now set to unfold, with both players vying for the position.
NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero recently emphasized the intensity of the upcoming battle during an appearance on The Rich Eisen Show, stating:
"They envision it being a true competition: Kyler Murray versus J.J. McCarthy. And both these guys are going to go into this believing they're gonna win this job. I don't know frankly how friendly that quarterback room is going to be. It's going to be a very competitive quarterback room."
According to Pelissero, the coaching staff is keeping an open mind as the competition develops. The outcome remains wide open, with no clear frontrunner at this stage.
Who Has the Edge in the QB Competition?
A "true competition" between Murray and McCarthy appears to favor the veteran. Murray brings more proven experience to the table, having been named the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2019 and earning Pro Bowl selections in 2020 and 2021.
For McCarthy to emerge victorious, he will need to deliver an exceptional performance. The 2024 first-round pick must outplay a quarterback who was selected first overall in the 2019 draft—Murray—while also overcoming his own injury history. McCarthy missed his entire rookie season due to a preseason knee injury and seven games in 2025.
What’s at Stake for Both Quarterbacks?
A competitive environment benefits both players, preparing them for the challenges ahead. However, the Vikings face a critical timeline: they must determine a starter before the regular season begins to ensure the chosen quarterback receives adequate first-team practice reps.
Another key factor in the competition is the locker room’s perception. If one player stands out as the clear favorite, the rest of the team will likely rally behind that individual, shaping the final decision.
