Longtime NFL assistant coach Tom Moore, 87, is returning to Iowa—the place where his football journey began. According to Scott Dochterman of The Athletic, Moore will take on a new role as senior consultant to the head coach and offensive advisor at the University of Iowa.

Moore’s connection to Iowa runs deep. He played quarterback for the Hawkeyes from 1958 to 1960 and later began his coaching career there from 1961 to 1962.

His coaching journey extended far beyond Iowa. After leaving, Moore coached at Dayton, Wake Forest, Georgia Tech, Minnesota, the New York Stars of the WFL, and returned to Minnesota before joining the NFL in 1977.

Moore’s NFL tenure included:

  • Pittsburgh Steelers (13 seasons)
  • Minnesota Vikings (4 seasons)
  • Detroit Lions (3 seasons)
  • New Orleans Saints (1 season)
  • Indianapolis Colts (starting in 1998)

With the Colts, Moore became a key figure in Peyton Manning’s rookie season. He served as Manning’s offensive coordinator for the first 11 years of his career before transitioning to a senior role in 2009 and 2010.

Moore later coached with the New York Jets (1 year), Tennessee Titans (1 year), and Arizona Cardinals (5 years under head coach Bruce Arians). After a year off in 2018, he reunited with Arians in Tampa Bay, where he worked as an offensive consultant from 2019 to 2025.

Throughout his career, Moore earned four Super Bowl rings:

  • Two with the Steelers (1978, 1979)
  • One with the Colts (2006)
  • One with the Buccaneers (2020)

Now, 64 years after departing Iowa, Moore’s career has come full circle with his return to the Hawkeyes.
