General Motors’ luxury brand, Cadillac, is preparing a more advanced version of its XT5 crossover for the Chinese market. The updated model will introduce lidar-based autonomous driving technology and a plug-in hybrid powertrain, positioning it as a more technologically advanced alternative to the aging U.S. version.

The new XT5 was recently listed by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), revealing key upgrades that align with Cadillac’s expanding electric vehicle strategy.

Design Tweaks Align with Cadillac’s EV Aesthetic

The styling remains largely consistent with the current XT5, but subtle revisions include a revised front grille with illuminated accents and a new central intake featuring active shutters. These changes improve aerodynamic efficiency, particularly when operating in electric-only mode.

At the rear, the crossover sports a redesigned bumper without exhaust cutouts, giving it a cleaner, more streamlined appearance reminiscent of Cadillac’s electric models.

Autonomous Driving: Lidar and Super Cruise Rival

Some variants will be equipped with an advanced semi-autonomous driving system, identifiable by a roof-mounted lidar sensor and additional sensors on the front fenders. The system, dubbed Xiao Yao Zhi Xing, was developed in collaboration with Momenta and is already featured in certain Chinese-market Buick models.

Xiao Yao Zhi Xing functions similarly to Cadillac’s Super Cruise, enabling hands-free driving in urban environments. It handles complex scenarios such as lane changes, pedestrian crossings, roundabouts, and cut-ins.

Powertrain: Plug-in Hybrid with Dual Electric Motors

According to the MIIT listing, the upgraded XT5 will feature a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine paired with two electric motors. The system delivers a combined output of 363 hp (271 kW / 368 PS)148 hp (110 kW / 150 PS) from the gasoline engine and 215 hp (160 kW / 218 PS) from the front electric motor, with an additional 148 hp (110 kW / 150 PS) from the rear motor.

This setup suggests a range-extended electric vehicle (REEV) configuration, though Cadillac has confirmed it is a plug-in hybrid (PHEV).

For comparison, the standard U.S.-market XT5 is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with mild-hybrid assistance, producing 233 hp (174 kW / 237 PS) and 258 lb-ft (350 Nm) of torque. It is paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission, enabling a 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) sprint in 8 seconds and a top speed of 130 mph (210 km/h).
