The Testaments star Mattea Conforti has shed light on her character Becka’s pivotal drunken revelation in Season 1, Episode 5, describing how “liquid courage” enabled Becka to share her long-suppressed feelings with Daisy (Lucy Halliday).

Becka’s deep affection for Agnes (Chase Infiniti) has been evident throughout the series, evolving from friendship into something far more profound. This love, combined with the pressure of their impending roles as wives in Gilead, became too much for Becka to conceal. The breaking point came during a ball for commanders with green pins, where Becka was so intoxicated she became physically ill. Daisy then took her to a bathroom, where Becka finally expressed her true feelings for Agnes.

Conforti emphasized that alcohol played a significant role in Becka’s confession, but noted that the moment was the result of years of repressed emotions and internal conflict.

“I think, obviously, [alcohol] had a very big role in her confronting her own feelings to Daisy in that episode. However, I think that it was just a culmination of so many feelings that had to be suppressed and so many internal battles and struggles that Becka, unfortunately, had to go through from that Episode 1, from straight off the bat. I think letting one internal struggle that she has been dealing with for such a long time out was just bound to happen. And unfortunately, it was alleviated through that liquid courage.”

In Gilead, homosexuality is strictly forbidden and often punishable by death. Despite this, Becka felt safe confiding in Daisy, a Pearl Girl whose loyalty to Gilead is often questioned. Conforti explained that Daisy’s outsider perspective and experiences from the “outside world” made her a uniquely understanding confidante for Becka.

“I think it was a combination of many things. I think one: she was the closest person, out of convenience, that she could talk to. But also, I think in a way, Daisy offers a new insight to her world. She’s from the outside world. She has a new perspective to offer. And Becka isn’t enthused with her ultimate fate in Gilead of one day becoming a wife and one day becoming a mother to someone’s children. She doesn’t want that. And Daisy has seen alternative options in an alternative universe that exists. So I think Becka finds some comfort in knowing that Daisy could possibly understand her feelings of feeling different in a unique way.”

The Testaments Season 1, Episode 5 is now available to stream on Hulu.
