In February, numerous workers employed by Sama, a Kenya-headquartered company contracted by Meta to perform data annotation for Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, reported viewing sensitive, embarrassing, and seemingly private footage recorded by the devices.
According to a BBC report published today, Meta terminated its contract with Sama “less than two months” after a joint investigation by Swedish newspapers Svenska Dagbladet and Göteborgs-Posten, along with Kenya-based freelance journalist Naipanoi Lepapa, exposed workers’ complaints about viewing explicit footage captured by Ray-Ban Meta glasses.
Sama, which had been responsible for video, image, and speech annotation for Meta’s AI systems, confirmed that the contract termination impacted 1,108 workers.
