Microsoft’s new Xbox CEO Asha Sharma and Xbox Chief Content Officer Matt Booty have jointly outlined a strategic vision for the future of Xbox, framed as a “return of Xbox.” In a memo to the company, Sharma and Booty define the priorities for the platform’s growth, emphasizing daily active players as the ultimate measure of success.

The memo outlines four core pillars for the future of Xbox:

  • Hardware: Improving console and device offerings.
  • Content: Expanding and enhancing game libraries and exclusives.
  • Experience: Streamlining user interactions, including search, discovery, social features, and personalization.
  • Services: Strengthening the Xbox ecosystem and subscription offerings.

Key Challenges Acknowledged

Sharma and Booty acknowledge significant frustrations among players, including:

  • Infrequent feature drops on console.
  • Weak presence and engagement on PC.
  • Increasing difficulty for players to keep up with pricing.
  • Fragmented core experiences across search, discovery, social, and personalization.

“Players are frustrated,” Sharma and Booty admit in the memo. “New feature drops on console have been less frequent. Our presence on PC isn't strong enough. Pricing is getting harder for people to keep up with. And core experiences like search, discovery, social, and personalization still feel too fragmented.”

The memo signals a renewed focus on addressing these pain points to rebuild player trust and engagement.
