Minecraft, the iconic sandbox survival game, revolutionized the genre with its blocky visual style, intuitive crafting system, rewarding resource acquisition, and diverse multiplayer modes. Fifteen years after its original release, it continues to thrive.
The game was developed by Swedish programmer Markus "Notch" Persson over a single weekend in May 2009. A month later, Persson founded Mojang Studios in Stockholm to develop Minecraft 1.0.0, the official version released for Mac and PC in November 2011.
Microsoft acquired Minecraft and Mojang Studios in September 2014, following the game’s sale of 54 million copies and 100 million registered users. Despite concerns about corporate ownership, Minecraft’s appeal has only expanded since the acquisition.
The latest version, Minecraft 26.1, released in March, introduces new blocks, mechanics, mobs, and challenges that were absent in earlier iterations.
