NCIS Season 23 Finale Ends with Major Unanswered Questions

NCIS concluded its 23rd season with a gripping finale titled "Sons and Daughters", leaving viewers with a cliffhanger that could redefine the show’s future. The episode, which aired on Tuesday, followed Special Agent Timothy McGee (Sean Murray) as he introduced his newly discovered adult son, Mateo (Patrick Keleher), to the NCIS team.

Mateo’s Mysterious Visit to NCIS Headquarters

McGee, who recently learned about Mateo’s existence, invited him to tour the agency’s headquarters. However, Mateo’s conflicting stories to McGee and fellow agent Nick Torres (Wilmer Valderrama) raised suspicions. The tension escalated into a standoff in a dark alley, where Mateo warned Torres that stopping could put him in danger. The episode ended abruptly, with a gunshot heard in the distance—leaving fans to speculate about who was shot and what happens next.

Sean Murray Reacts to the Cliffhanger

"I see at least three or four awesome ways this can go," Murray told TheWrap. "What does it do to Mateo? What does it do to Torres and McGee’s relationship? A lot of stuff’s at stake here."

Murray expressed excitement about the finale, calling it a creative high for the long-running CBS series. "The fact that I’ve been here for 23 years and I’m super excited about this finale. I think it means we’re doing something right," he added.

NCIS Hits Milestone with 500th Episode

The Season 23 finale also marked a historic moment for NCIS, as it surpassed its 500th episode—a rare achievement in modern television. Murray reflected on the show’s legacy and his hopes for McGee and Mateo’s evolving relationship.

Murray’s Thoughts on the Season and Future

"I was very happy when I saw what was planned, and what we ended up doing. This year has been, in my opinion, a particularly good year for the show in terms of stories and just stakes for the characters. I’ve really been quite into this whole season. And I think our finale is terrific."

The actor highlighted the personal stakes of the finale, particularly McGee’s efforts to bond with his newly discovered son. "He’s trying to make up for lost time a little bit. So he’s trying to be there and form a relationship with him. The personal stake is all about that last scene, and what happens next."

What’s Next for NCIS?

With the cliffhanger unresolved, fans will have to wait until Season 24 to see how Mateo’s actions impact McGee, Torres, and the entire NCIS team. Murray confirmed his enthusiasm for the direction, stating, "I’m really happy with the episode."
