The Nintendo headquarters in Kyoto, Japan, was the target of a bomb threat on May 16, 2026, leading to a police investigation and the arrest of the suspect.

The Minami Station of Kyoto Prefectural Police announced the arrest of a 27-year-old unemployed man from Ishibashimachi in Aichi Prefecture’s Hekinan City. The suspect allegedly sent a letter to Nintendo’s headquarters in Kyoto’s Minami ward, falsely claiming to have planted multiple bombs inside the building.

Following the threat, Nintendo contacted local authorities, who conducted a search of the area. No suspicious objects or injuries were found, and the premises were deemed safe.

The suspect has been charged with obstructing business by force and is currently being interrogated to determine his motive.

Nintendo’s History of Threat-Related Disruptions

This incident is not the first time Nintendo’s operations have been disrupted by terror threats. In late 2023, the company received 39 threat messages via its website’s contact form, which resulted in significant disruptions:

  • Nintendo Live 2024 Tokyo was canceled.
  • Upcoming tournaments for Splatoon 3 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe were postponed.

In response to these threats, the Kyoto Prefectural Police arrested a civil servant from Ibaraki Prefecture in early April 2024 as the primary suspect.

Police Continue Investigation

The investigation into the latest bomb threat is ongoing, with authorities working to uncover the full details of the suspect’s motives and potential connections to prior incidents.
