Nissan has unveiled two dramatic SUV concepts in Beijing, both of which will inspire new production models to be revealed within the next year. At least one of these concepts will be sold in select global markets.
The Terrano PHEV Concept: A Rugged Off-Roader
The most intriguing of the two concepts is the Terrano PHEV Concept, which appears to be based on the Frontier Pro PHEV. While Nissan previously used the Terrano name for a compact SUV sold between the mid-1990s and mid-2000s, this new iteration is distinctly different. In certain markets, it will slot between the larger Patrol and the X-Trail, known as the Rogue in the US.
Nissan has revealed few details about the Terrano PHEV, but it is expected to share its body-on-frame chassis with the Chinese-built Frontier Pro PHEV, developed in partnership with Dongfeng. This suggests it may feature the same powertrain: a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor, delivering a combined 429 hp (320 kW) and 590 lb-ft (800 Nm) of torque.
Design and Features
Unlike some of Nissan’s recent designs, the Terrano PHEV Concept excels in rugged styling. The SUV sits tall with an imposing front end, featuring LED headlights and illuminated branding. Additional off-road elements include:
- A rugged skid plate
- Tow hooks
- Off-road lights
- Rock sliders
- Roof rails
- Squared-off, black wheel arches
- A spare wheel carrier positioned behind a large support bar
The Urban SUV PHEV Concept: A Sleek Urban Option
Nissan’s second concept, the Urban SUV PHEV, is inspired by the Nissan NX8 and designed with young Chinese buyers in mind. Its frontend features slick LED lighting and a large lower black grille, while other standout features include:
- Digital wing mirrors
- Rear LED lighting
- No visible door handles, contributing to a sleek profile
Nissan has not yet announced long-term plans for the Urban SUV PHEV. However, the automaker confirmed that the production version of the Terrano PHEV will be sold in select global markets, extending beyond China.
What’s Next for Nissan’s New SUVs?
Both concepts are set to inspire production models, with the Terrano PHEV leading the charge for global expansion. While details remain limited, the Terrano PHEV’s positioning between the Patrol and X-Trail suggests a focus on versatility and off-road capability. The Urban SUV PHEV, meanwhile, targets urban buyers seeking a stylish and modern SUV.
Stay tuned for further updates as Nissan prepares to launch these new models in the coming year.
