Oakland police have intensified enforcement against illegal street takeovers after a group of ATV and dirt bike riders shut down parts of the Bay Bridge, causing traffic chaos and forcing lane closures.

On the scene, video showed dozens of riders weaving through traffic, performing wheelies alongside law-abiding drivers, and eventually bringing eastbound lanes to a standstill. Authorities reported that around 50 to 60 riders were initially involved, with the number later climbing to roughly 70. The group rode from Oakland toward San Francisco, lingered for nearly an hour, then headed back across the bridge, where traffic ground to a halt.

As police moved in, the riders reportedly abandoned their bikes and scattered. However, their attempt to evade capture was only partially successful. By Monday, Oakland Police confirmed that nine people were in custody, along with dozens of bikes recovered and transported on multiple trucks.

"Today, the Oakland Police Department recovered more than 70 ATVs and dirt bikes, along with vehicles, in connection with sideshow-related incidents and made multiple arrests," the force wrote on Facebook. "We thank CHP and SFPD for assisting in these recoveries on the Bay Bridge."

Following the bust, Oakland Police issued a stern warning: "Illegal sideshows will not be tolerated." Authorities emphasized that anyone participating in street takeovers or reckless driving will face citations or arrests, and vehicles used in these events will be impounded for 30 days.

Oakland’s Ongoing Battle Against Sideshows

Sideshows, also known as street takeovers, have plagued Oakland for years. These events often involve large crowds, blocked intersections, and dangerous driving stunts, creating hazards for both participants and the public.

Why ATVs and Dirt Bikes Are Harder to Enforce Against

While sideshows involving cars are common, the rise of ATV and dirt bike groups has added a new challenge for law enforcement. These riders can move quickly, overwhelm roads, and often disappear before officers can respond—a stark contrast to the limitations of pursuing suspects in high-speed vehicles like Dodge Challengers.

Despite these challenges, the latest crackdown demonstrates Oakland’s commitment to changing the dynamic. Whether this enforcement will deter future takeovers remains uncertain, especially with the upcoming GTA 6 video game potentially glamorizing such activities. For now, Oakland is sending a clear message: shutting down major infrastructure like the Bay Bridge will not be tolerated.
