After embracing player feedback, introducing new features, and rebranding by dropping the '2' from its name, Overwatch has experienced a renaissance in 2026. While the longevity of this revival remains uncertain in the competitive world of live service games, Blizzard appears to be back on track—for now.
However, Overwatch hasn’t fully shed the habits it adopted during its challenging period. Crossovers have become a staple, and now, the trend has come full circle. The original Overwatch struggled to compete with the rise of Fortnite, which exploded in popularity a few years after Overwatch’s launch, just as the latter began reducing its update schedule in favor of the still-developing Overwatch 2.
It seemed almost poetic—albeit derogatory—when Overwatch 2 embraced crossovers starting in 2023. The game’s once-unique universe became a platform for collaborations with brands like Transformers, GI Joe, multiple anime franchises, and Porsche. Now, the cycle is complete with Overwatch set to appear in Fortnite, a gaming phenomenon that even featured Overwatch’s Tracer in its film adaptation, Ready Player One.
Overwatch Heroes and Maps Join Fortnite on May 14
According to Game Informer, iconic Overwatch characters—D.Va, Genji, Tracer, and Mercy—will join Fortnite on May 14, 2026. Several maps will also receive Overwatch-themed landmarks, including:
- Hanamura
- Busan Drum Pavilion
- King's Row
- Watchpoints
Additionally, Overwatch-inspired weapons will enter Fortnite’s loot pool. Notably, Tracer’s pistols will allow players to switch to first-person mode and blink across the map at high speeds.
Is the Crossover Trend Losing Its Appeal?
While fans of blending action figures from different universes may rejoice, there are signs that the crossover trend—and Fortnite’s dominance—may be waning. Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney cited a “downturn in Fortnite engagement” when announcing mass layoffs earlier in 2026. The company responsible for Overwatch, Microsoft, is also facing challenges, including struggles to regain player trust on Xbox and the departure of the general manager of Microsoft Israel following an investigation into potential unethical use of its Azure cloud technology.
“Now Genji can have an ultimate ninja showdown with Naruto or whatever. What a time to be alive.”
