Overwatch’s 10th anniversary celebration has faced criticism for its underwhelming rewards, prompting Blizzard to make adjustments. While much of the hype has shifted toward the game’s collaboration with Fortnite, the developer is now addressing player concerns about its in-game event.
Game director Aaron Keller acknowledged the feedback on social media, stating,
"We’ve been reading and watching reactions to the anniversary event this week, and they’re fair. Ten years of Overwatch is a huge milestone, and we want this entire year to feel like a celebration of Overwatch. While the current Anniversary event is a one-off, we absolutely want to continue delivering goodness throughout this special year."
Keller confirmed that Blizzard will increase loot box rewards during weeks two and three of the anniversary event, which runs through early June. Specifically:
- Week two: Community loot boxes will double.
- Week three: Community loot boxes will triple.
- Total games required to earn loot boxes reduced to 60, with wins counting as double.
The most significant change arrives in week three, where players will receive 10-Year Anniversary loot boxes containing four guaranteed Legendary skins, bringing the event’s total to 10 Legendaries.
Keller added,
"I understand that future rewards don’t make this specific event bigger, but I hope it gives some context for how we're thinking about this year as a whole."He also teased an additional season-long event in Season 3 with more rewards, along with other ideas planned for later in the year.
The adjustments come as Blizzard acknowledges over-reliance on loot boxes as a reward mechanism. While the immediate changes aim to improve the anniversary event, players will still have the four new Overwatch skins in Fortnite to look forward to in the near term.
