New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel will not attend the third day of the 2024 NFL Draft after electing to participate in counseling amid ongoing league-wide controversy. The decision comes as the Patriots finalized their first-round selection on Thursday night.
Following the draft’s opening round, Eliot Wolf, the team’s vice president of player personnel, addressed the media. Reporters questioned Wolf about Vrabel’s absence and the team’s preparedness for the draft’s remaining rounds.
Wolf emphasized the personal nature of Vrabel’s situation while reaffirming the organization’s support for the head coach.
"I just refer to the statement," Wolf said. "That's a personal thing that Mike's dealing with and going through, and obviously we support him. As far as the work is concerned on Saturday, not too worried about that. Just as far as the process that we have in place, the people that we have in place. And it's going to be different without his presence there, but we feel really good about the people that we have in place to make up for it."
Wolf was further pressed on what the Patriots would miss most with Vrabel absent from the draft room.
"The stability of him as a person, some of the leadership, some of the presence," Wolf said. "He does a nice job for us with the undrafted players. Obviously, he's a tremendous recruiter, so that's maybe something that we'll be missing. But again, we're very confident in the people we have with the process. The assistant coaches have done a tremendous job, as have the scouts, preparing for day three. And we're excited about it."
Wolf confirmed he would maintain contact with Vrabel if necessary and retains final authority over draft-day decisions. The absence of Vrabel—particularly his role in recruiting undrafted free agents—poses a notable challenge, as the Patriots scramble to identify and sign unselected talent.
The Patriots’ depth in assistant coaches and scouts is expected to mitigate the impact of Vrabel’s absence, according to Wolf, who expressed confidence in the team’s established process.
