One of the rarest and most original Shelby Cobras ever built is heading to auction next week, and it’s expected to draw intense interest from collectors. The 1966 Shelby 427 Cobra Roadster, one of only 16 factory-built examples painted black, retains its original chassis, body, and V8 powertrain. Mecum Auctions will offer the car, which is in exceptional condition and could sell for over $3 million.

This particular Cobra is one of roughly 155 big-block models produced, and it features the highly sought-after dual-quad carburetor setup. The car’s originality is a standout feature—its 427 cubic-inch V8 remains paired to the factory four-speed manual transmission, and the body and chassis have never been replaced. Unlike many Cobras that have undergone restorations or been rebuilt as continuation cars, this example appears to be untouched.

Unmatched Originality and Condition

The roadster’s exterior is immaculate, with no visible signs of damage. Chrome front and rear bars, classic wheels, and flawless bodywork contribute to its showroom-like appearance. Inside, the cabin is equally pristine, featuring original black upholstery, a metal shift knob, a wood-rimmed three-spoke steering wheel, and classic gauges. Every component appears to be in its original state, a rarity in the Shelby Cobra world.

Why This Cobra Is So Valuable

Classic 427 Cobras routinely command seven-figure prices at auction. While high-mileage or less desirable examples can sell for around $1 million, pristine, low-mileage models with original specifications often exceed $3 million. The provenance and originality of this car make it a standout, even among Cobras. As Mecum notes, few purchases can match the historical significance and prestige of owning a Shelby Cobra like this one.

For those with the budget and passion, the Mecum listing is available now. Bidding will close next week, and the car is expected to disappear into a private collection shortly after.
