Renault Kangoo Couleur: A Stripped-Back Lifestyle Van with Bold Colors
The Renault Kangoo has long been known in Europe as a practical delivery van or a no-frills family vehicle. In Japan, however, it has carved out a different niche—as a lifestyle accessory. The Kangoo Couleur special edition embraces this role, blending minimalist design with vibrant colors and outdoor-ready features.
At first glance, the Couleur appears to be a base-trim model, thanks to its unpainted plastic bumpers and black steel wheels—details often associated with budget versions. However, the presence of LED headlights and optional roof racks signals that this is no ordinary workhorse.
The Standout Features of the Kangoo Couleur
- Bold Color Options: The Couleur is highlighted by the striking Vert Foret (green) shade, inspired by early summer French forests. The longer Grand Kangoo Couleur is available in Vert Paris (dark green) and Jaune La Poste (yellow).
- All-Season Capability: The black 16-inch steel wheels are fitted with Michelin CrossClimate all-season tires, and the "Extended Grip" switch on the center console enhances traction on slippery surfaces.
- Versatile Cargo and Passenger Space: The standard Kangoo measures 4,490 mm (176.8 in) long and seats five. The Grand Kangoo stretches to 4,910 mm (193.3 in), offering seating for seven or a cargo capacity of up to 3,750 liters (132.4 cubic feet) when seats are removed.
- Urban-Friendly Design: Japanese-spec models feature rear barn doors instead of a tailgate, simplifying loading and unloading in tight spaces.
Powertrain Options and Performance
The Japanese-market Kangoo Couleur offers two powertrain choices:
- 1.3L Turbo Gasoline Engine: Produces 129 hp (96 kW / 131 PS) and is paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Power is sent to the front wheels.
- 1.5L Turbodiesel Engine: Generates 114 hp (85 kW / 116 PS) and comes exclusively with a six-speed manual gearbox. Like the gasoline variant, it is front-wheel drive.
Note: Later generations of the Kangoo no longer offer the 4WD option found in the original model.
Limited Availability: A Lottery for 100 Units
Production of the Kangoo Couleur is strictly limited to 100 units, with a split of 40 gasoline examples and 60 manual diesel models. Both versions are priced at ¥4,390,000 ($27,600), which is ¥200,000 ($1,300) more than the standard diesel model in Japan.
Prospective buyers will need more than just cash—they’ll need luck. The Kangoo Couleur will be sold through a lottery system. The Grand Kangoo Couleur, available next month, will also follow the same lottery process. Production for the long-wheelbase seven-seater version is capped at 100 units, evenly divided between the two available colors.
"The Kangoo Couleur leans into the idea of the Kangoo as a lifestyle accessory, pairing stripped-back looks with vivid colors and an outdoorsy brief."
A Tradition of Exclusivity
The Kangoo Couleur continues Renault’s tradition of offering limited-edition models that blend practicality with personality. With its bold colors, all-season capability, and lottery-based sales model, it’s clear that this special edition is designed for enthusiasts rather than everyday commuters.
