On Wednesday night, the New York Mets ended a 12-game losing streak, putting an end to concerns at Late Night with Seth Meyers that the NBC crew might have cursed the team. But on Thursday, Meyers took the joke further, tracing the Mets’ misfortune back to a single image from 2006—one featuring Donald Trump lurking in the crowd.

Meyers Jokes About the Mets’ Superstitions

To open his “A Closer Look” segment, Meyers celebrated the Mets’ win before pivoting to a deeper explanation of the team’s struggles. He noted that his crew, many of whom are Mets fans, began to suspect they had jinxed the team when Mr. and Mrs. Met visited the show at the start of the season and gifted a Yankees jersey to Cue Card Wally, despite his fandom.

2006 Playoff Elimination and Trump’s Presence

Meyers then revealed that the real curse began much earlier. “In 2006, the Mets were eliminated from the playoffs by the Cardinals when their star player, Carlos Beltrán, struck out looking,” he recalled. “It’s one of the Mets fans’ most painful memories that started a decade-long spiral for the team. Now I’m going to show you a picture of that horrible moment. See if you spot any familiar faces.”

A photo of the moment appeared on screen, and in the crowd, Donald Trump could be seen standing.

“Oh my God! Oh, my God. He is like Forrest Gump, but only for bad stuff.”

Meyers continued, “My favorite part of that picture is how Trump’s not even wearing any Mets stuff. He’s not wearing a raincoat, he’s just standing there in a suit at a baseball game, like a business angel of death. It’s like a horror movie where some teenagers steal cufflinks off a dead body, and then they see this dude everywhere they go.”
