King Charles III delivered a series of sharp, intelligent quips aimed at President Donald Trump during a high-profile visit to the White House this week—yet Seth Meyers suspects the jokes sailed right over Trump’s head.
During his “A Closer Look” segment on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, the NBC host dissected some of the most memorable moments from the British monarch’s trip to the U.S., a visit intended to strengthen U.S.-UK relations amid ongoing tensions.
Trump has previously criticized the UK for not supporting the U.S. in the conflict with Iran, which the U.S. initiated. He once claimed that, without American intervention, England would be speaking German. King Charles III had a ready response.
“Dare I say that, if it wasn’t for us, you’d be speaking French?”
The room erupted in laughter, including Trump himself. But Meyers was quick to question Trump’s reaction.
“Oh, man, when Trump heard that joke, I guarantee he fake laughed so hard, because he definitely didn’t get it,” Meyers said. “‘Haha all right, well said, what though?’ And let me just say, can you imagine Donald Trump trying to speak French? He can barely speak English.”
King Charles also poked fun at Trump’s long-running plans to construct a ballroom in the White House’s East Wing. The monarch jokingly apologized for Britain’s past renovations, referencing the War of 1812, when British forces burned down the White House.
“Ah hahahaha,” Meyers said, mimicking Trump’s reaction. “Oh, Charles, your punch lines are like sex with Melania. I don’t get it!”
