Seth Meyers, host of Late Night with Seth Meyers on NBC, hesitated to move on from a joke during his monologue on Tuesday, June 11, 2024, not because the audience was laughing, but because he wanted to linger on a photo of President Donald Trump’s bruised hand.
At the start of the segment, Meyers referenced the state visit of King Charles III to the United States, which commemorates the 250th anniversary of America. He quipped:
"As well as the 280th anniversary of their hands!"
An image then appeared on screen showing both Trump’s hand—bruised—and King Charles’ hand, which appeared swollen and adorned with a pinky ring. As the audience reacted with laughter, Meyers paused, smiled, and remained silent while holding on the image for several seconds. He eventually explained:
"Sorry, I just know when I start the next joke, the picture changes."
Meyers proceeded with the monologue shortly after, though Trump’s hand has long been a recurring punchline for the late-night host. In past segments, Meyers has referred to Trump’s hand as resembling something from The Addams Family. He even joked about not covering the topic as much as he would prefer, suggesting he might be making up for lost time.
Just one week prior, Meyers joked that Trump’s hand might foreshadow the end of a potential second presidency—not with impeachment, but in a manner reminiscent of Willy Wonka.
