Eight children were killed in a mass shooting in Shreveport, Louisiana, over the weekend of April 20, 2026. The victims ranged in age from 3 to 11 years old, with the oldest child being 11 and the youngest just 3.
At a press conference on Monday, the schools superintendent recalled one child who had recently celebrated improving his literacy scores. Another child, described by a grieving family member, loved playing outside with Nerf guns.
What Happened in the Shreveport Mass Shooting
Investigators are still reconstructing the events of early Sunday morning, April 20, 2026. The children appear to have been victims of domestic violence, killed by an Army National Guard veteran who was the father of seven of the eight children.
Neighbors and friends reported that the suspect was angry at the two women who were the children’s mothers. These women lived in two separate homes where the shootings occurred over the span of about an hour. One of the women was married to the suspect and was in the process of seeking a divorce.
The two women survived their injuries. A third woman, the suspect’s sister-in-law, escaped with a 12-year-old child after jumping off a roof during the rampage.
The suspect was found dead at a nearby house where he had attempted to hide after the killings. Authorities believe he either took his own life or was shot by police. Friends and family described a history of mental illness and mentioned that he had spoken of "dark thoughts."
Suspect’s Relationship with His Children
Despite the violence, those who knew the suspect said he appeared to love his children. Two days before the killings, he posted a photo on Facebook showing his 11-year-old daughter sitting in the passenger seat of a car, holding a drink and ketchup packets while eating a burger.
"Lol!!!! Took my oldest on a lil 1 on 1 date had to catch her down bad ugh ugh…"

Shreveport Shooting Among Deadliest in Recent U.S. History
The Shreveport massacre is the deadliest mass shooting in the United States since the January 2024 killings of eight people in Joliet, Illinois. Other recent mass shootings include:
- October 2023: 18 killed at a bowling alley and restaurant in Maine
- May 2023: 9 killed at a Dallas-area outlet mall
- January 2023: 7 killed at a dance studio in Southern California
- May 2022: 21 killed at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas
- May 2022: 10 killed at a Buffalo, New York, supermarket
Limited National Attention Raises Concerns
While previous mass shootings commanded national attention for days, the Shreveport tragedy received far less coverage. On the day it occurred, the story was buried deep on the New York Times homepage, requiring multiple scrolls to locate. More than 48 hours after the incident, major outlets like the Washington Post and New York Times had not yet published dedicated articles on the front pages of their websites.
This lack of coverage has sparked discussions about the normalization of mass shootings in the U.S., with many questioning whether the public and media have become desensitized to such tragedies.
