White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller has faced scrutiny over his alleged racist views and actions, including his policies targeting Latino immigrants. A recent Financial Times report delved into Miller’s personal history, revealing troubling details about his past relationships and long-standing prejudices.
According to Jean Guerrero, author of Hatemonger: Stephen Miller, Donald Trump, and the White Nationalist Agenda, Miller had a relationship in college with a light-skinned conservative Latina who was deeply uncomfortable with him. Guerrero stated,
“He liked her a lot more than she liked him.… She was embarrassed to be seen with him, and didn’t want people to know he was her boyfriend.”The woman, who remained anonymous, declined further comment when contacted by the Financial Times.
While some speculated that this rejection may have fueled Miller’s anti-immigrant policies, the report noted that his racist tendencies predated this relationship. Former classmate Jason Islas recalled a disturbing incident from 1998, when Miller, before starting high school, called him to say they were no longer friends because Islas was Mexican.
Miller’s high school yearbook included a quote from Theodore Roosevelt:
“There can be no 50-50 Americanism in this country. There is room here for only 100 per cent Americanism, only for those who are Americans and nothing else.”
Islas reflected on Miller’s behavior, stating,
A kid being cruel to another kid is not that interesting. What is interesting is that he continues down this path—clearly that’s calcified into something deeper and more powerful and menacing. He has this idea of how America should look, how power should look. It’s very Trumpy, and it’s very fascist.… It’s bound in aesthetics. He believes that the category of people who have rights, who are true Americans, look a certain way.
