British pop star Dua Lipa has filed a lawsuit against Samsung Electronics, seeking at least $15 million in damages. The legal complaint, filed on Friday in the United States District Court for the Central District of California, alleges that Samsung illegally used a copyrighted image of Lipa on its television cardboard boxes last year.
The lawsuit claims that Samsung violated Lipa’s right of publicity, as well as infringed on her copyright and trademark rights. The image in question was allegedly taken from her performance at the 2024 Austin City Limits music festival.
Samsung Ignored Repeated Requests to Remove Image
According to the lawsuit, Lipa and her team first became aware of Samsung’s use of the image in June 2025 and repeatedly requested that the company stop using it. The lawsuit describes Samsung’s response as “dismissive and callous,” stating that the company refused the demand.
“Ms. Lipa’s face was prominently used for a mass marketing campaign for a consumer product without her knowledge, without consideration, and as to which she had no say, control, or input whatsoever.”
Lipa’s legal team also emphasized that she is “highly selective” of her endorsements, which include partnerships with Apple, Porsche, Versace, Bulgari, and Nespresso.
Potential Impact on Consumer Purchases
The lawsuit highlights the potential influence of Lipa’s image on consumer spending. It cites social media posts where users admitted they purchased Samsung TVs because of her presence on the packaging.
“I’d get that tv just because Dua is on it. That’s how obsessed I am,”
“Dua Lipa deserves compensation. The only reason I bought my Samsung TV back in 2019 was this woman’s face. It was nothing to do with the tv quality or the price or the features.”
Since the lawsuit became public, more users have shared similar sentiments on social media, further supporting Lipa’s claims.
