Created by an anonymous developer known as @underpaid_mom on X, WenWare was built as a submission for vibejam 2026, an AI-based browser game development competition. The game launched in late April 2026 with the tagline: “a time-traveling GeoGuessr-inspired game where you can explore immersive 360-degree historical scenes.”

How WenWare Works

Each game session challenges players to explore five different historical scenes, such as the Wright brothers’ first flight, the coronation of Charlemagne, or the creation of Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper. Players have 60 seconds to analyze details like vehicle silhouettes, uniform cuts, roof shapes, or unfamiliar flags before submitting two answers:

• Year: Adjust a timeline slider to guess the correct era.
• Location: Pinpoint the spot on a Google Maps overlay in the lower right corner of the screen.

The game scores both answers simultaneously, displaying proximity on a map and providing a card that explains the scene. Scores accumulate across categories—modern, medieval, ancient, or the most challenging any of the three ages—to determine a player’s rank on the global leaderboard.

Behind the Scenes: AI and Vibe Coding

WenWare was developed using three AI tools:

• GPT-Image-2 (OpenAI): Generates photorealistic 360-degree equirectangular images from prompts. These images capture every direction—up, down, left, right, and behind—then flatten them into a distorted, panoramic format.
• Three.js: A JavaScript library that transforms the flat 360-degree image into an immersive virtual sphere. Players are placed at the center, with their mouse movements controlling their gaze, creating a fully navigable 3D environment.
• Vibe Coding: The game’s development relied on rapid, iterative AI-assisted coding techniques to refine the user experience and historical accuracy of the scenes.
