The Trump administration has terminated several members of the National Science Board (NSB), an independent body responsible for establishing policies for the National Science Foundation (NSF).
According to screenshots shared with The Washington Post, dismissed board members received a message stating their positions were "terminated, effective immediately."
The NSB oversees policies for the NSF, a U.S. agency that allocates approximately 25% of federal research funding to colleges and universities. Established over 75 years ago, the NSF has contributed to major technological advancements, including MRIs and cellphones.
Currently, the NSB has 22 active members, though it can accommodate up to 25. The board’s former director, Sethuraman Panchanathan, resigned abruptly last year.
Congressional Response to the Dismissals
Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren, Ranking Member of the House’s Science, Space and Technology Committee, condemned the decision in a statement:
"This is the latest stupid move made by a president who continues to harm science and American innovation. It unfortunately is no surprise a president who has attacked NSF from day one would seek to destroy the board that helps guide the Foundation."
Lofgren referred to the dismissals as a "real bozo the clown move."
Uncertainty Surrounding Future Board Meetings
It remains unclear whether the NSB’s next scheduled meeting, set for May 5, will proceed as planned. The NSF has not yet provided further details regarding the dismissals.
